503 Use of low-dose spironolactone in female pattern hair loss in a specialty alopecia clinic

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) results from a combination of hormones, aging, and genetics, is the most common type alopecia in women. Topical minoxidil remains only US Food Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment for this condition, although numerous other therapies have demonstrated efficacy recent years. Spironolactone, weak androgen receptor inhibitor, largely effective at various doses, but evidence on its use FPHL limited. A retrospective chart review was conducted adult women specialty clinic with treated low-dose spironolactone, defined as ≤50mg daily, either monotherapy or therapy therapeutic agents. We identified 14 patients seen within two-year span spironolactone. The average age 59 years ranged 46 to 79. Amongst all patients, 11 (78.6%) Caucasian, 1 (7.1%) Asian, Black Hispanic. Spironolactone dose 25mg 50mg, 46.4mg. About 50% were medications, namely topical 5% foam and/or low-level light laser least 6 months before starting Sinclair scale spironolactone 2.64, which decreased 2.11 approximately 1-year after Reported adverse events included breast tenderness patient, dizziness 2 one self-resolved, nausea patient increased urination patient.
